Local Love: Great American Brass Band Festival

Grassroots music has always been Kentucky’s best kept secret.   From Bluegrass, to Brass Band, the region is marked by music festivals throughout the summer.  One way you can join in as we celebrate our rockin’ musical cultural is by visiting Danville, KY for The Great American Brass Band Festival!

There will be activities all weekend starting Thursday, June 5, but the highlight of the Festival is Saturday, June 7’s events. 

http://www.gabbf.org/wp-content/uploads/2014/03/2014_Poster_for_web_1.jpgThe day starts with Run for the Brass, a 5K race through Millennium Park  Following the race at 11 is the People’s Parade on Main Street which is the official kick off to the day of free brass music!  Lexington’s own (and a staff favorite) March Madness will be marching, so be sure to give give them a hootin’ and a hollerin’ (Trust, me, it would be hard not to.)  

The Great American Picnic begins at 5:00 pm and is presented on the Old Centre Great Lawn.  You can participate in a fun fundraising tradition by reserving a table and decorating it with elaborate and colorful themes.  Or, you can enjoy the night’s entertainment from the comfort of your lawn chair or picnic blanket.  Either way, you are set up for a great night of Brass Band music under the stars.

  • Storyville Stompers

By bringing the best brass musicians in the world to its stage, the GABBF hopes to foster appreciation and enjoyment of Brass Band music and history of the American brass band movement through public concerts, exhibitions, and other related educational activities.  The Great American Brass Band Festival is committed to preserving brass band music through performance and education. The Festival seeks to showcase diversity in brass through a variety of genres, presentations and performances.
