Local Love: Blue Grass Airport

Wednesday, April 16, 2014

"Nestled among world famous Thoroughbred horse farms, Lexington's Blue Grass Airport welcomes travelers with lush green vistas and provides the gateway to Kentucky's rich history and equine tradition. As one of the nation's fastest growing airports, Blue Grass Airport continuously updates amenities and facilities to provide passengers with the most modern and convenient services possible."

As you may well know, we are proud of our move to KLEX, but not only because it makes us able to more effectively and efficiently sell aircraft; it also means we are now located at a great airport with a rich and exciting history.  Tonight we are celebrating that history as well as the future by hosting the Blue Grass Airport 2014 Spring GA BBQ.  We are excited to have the privilege to open our doors to the GA community and spotlight the Blue Grass Airport!  Please join us tonight, April 22nd at 5:30 for BBQ and discussion about future plans for GA at the airport.

For those of you who cannot make tonight’s event, our Local Love blog feature is the Blue Grass Airport.

The Blue Grass Airport came into fruition in 1940 when the city and county joined to purchase 523 acres of farmland.  Construction began, but WWII and the need for a secondary training facility and a supply gateway made the airport an important asset for the United States Army.  The Army took control of the airport, making the Army Air Corps B-25 bomber the first official aircraft to land on the Blue Grass Field.

After the war, construction for the terminals resumed and the first terminal was completed October 13, 1946. By 1968 the first jets began to operate at the airport.  From that point on, the Blue Grass Airport has made continual improvements to match the growing city of Lexington.  From a new terminal, to improved parking, to a state of the art security system; Blue Grass Airport works to help make your next flight your best flight.

Today, the Blue Grass Airport houses shopping and dining opportunities like the Blue Grass Market Place, The New York Times Bookstore & Gifts, Paddock Gallery, Market Fresh, Knob Creek Bourbon Lounge, Dunkin' Donuts, Kentucky Ale Taproom, and Pepper’s Mexican Grill & Cantina.  Some amenities include a children’s play area, The Club at Blue Grass, meeting facilities, and a welcome center.  The Blue Grass Airport is also home to TACAir (FBO operator) and companies like AirMart, Mustang Aviation, and Tex Sutton.

You can find Blue Grass Airport on the corner of Versailles Road and Man O’War Boulevard (another homage to Lexington’s racing history), nestled in the fields of  world famous Thoroughbred horse farms and yet minutes away from Lexington’s downtown, showcasing the diverse cultural experience Lexington offers visitors, residents, and born-and-raised Lexingtonians.
